Megan Ward

I grew up in Bridgenorth, Ontario, and graduated from OCAD University (Toronto, ON) in 2012 with a BFA in Drawing & Painting. My Honours year was completed at OCADU’s studio in Florence, Italy. I have returned to my hometown to live and work outside of the city setting, away from distractions and competing influences. I do not limit myself to one kind of subject matter or approach, and prefer to work on a sliding scale of naturalism–abstraction.

Since my time in Florence, I have focused on expressing ideas of memory through a variety of approaches. I began by using family photos as source material to make autobiographical, portrait-based paintings, reflective of the historical works with which I was surrounded. I have incorporated photography and gel transfer collage, hand-drawn ink details, and abstract paint application. These hint at the intertwining narratives and perspectives that make up our human experience. While oil paint is my preferred medium, acrylics lend themselves to recurring effects in my work; I continue to use both in my daily practice. Drawing influence from the world of graphic design, my current work is an exploration of the complexities of memory, impression, and imagination.
