A New Door of Opportunity -- Visual Arts Editor Welcomes you to LaVaLab

It was a long labour. There was some pushing and crying but ultimately the experience birthed a product of passion and a world of opportunity that we refer to as LaVaLab. Welcome!

As the Visual Arts Editor, I’m eager to work with an incredible team of literary and visual art industry professionals to bring you original content and valuable information. Though the Markham Arts Council produces this site, its value extends to artists and those who love art beyond city limits. The web has enabled what I like to call “permeable borders,” a quick and constant flow of information and experiences that transcend physical space and are integral to staying abreast with the visual art world today.

A bit about me: I'm a multi disciplinary visual artist working in painting, photography, sculpture and installation. I am obsessed with dichotomies, and inverting general expectations of how we interact with common objects and food. Chickens and chicken bones are a regular occurrence in my work.

The other major hat I wear is that of Associate Director of the York Region Arts Council – a small non-profit with a large purview. My focus and interest lies in developing professional development programs, exposure and networking opportunities for early to mid-career artists.

Between having spent my entire life in York Region and studying art in Toronto, I developed what some people think is a ludicrous resolve of strengthening the arts sector north of the big city. After stumbling upon the Markham Arts Council over four years ago, I realized there were others who shared my mission, which made it more tangible and entirely possible. LaVaLab builds on this vision by creating an online hub for literary and visual artists and by being completely inclusive of the Francophone and First Nation’s communities.

What is LaVaLab beyond the “About Us” section? Yes, it enables artists to host profiles and share work, learn about opportunities and find the next exhibition opening to attend. What LaVaLab truly is at the core is a community without boundaries to learn, grow, share and connect with diverse artists who propel one another’s creative career forward. Expect the visual arts editorial content to challenge, enlighten and inspire through interviews with artists, in depth looks at current trends in Canadian art and other engaging topics. By creating a profile and uploading your work, you may be selected as a feature for a future article.

If you haven’t already, I hope your mouse is now making its way up the screen to the “Become a Member” button, your first step to opening a door full of possibilities. Have an upcoming exhibition or event you want to share with the world? We’ll help you spread the word! Simply email details along with an image (jpg format please!) to whatson@lavalab.ca. Examples of what you can search for on the site and/or send us to post are art workshops, retreats, seminars, conferences, critiques, exhibitions, studio tours, art fairs, calls for submissions, job opportunities and more!

Contact me at visualarts@lavalab.ca anytime with questions, thoughts, inspirations, insights or to simply have a great conversation about art. We all feed off each other’s experience and creative energy so the content on this site will be as dynamic as we make it together.

Enjoy!

Samantha Rodin,

Visual Arts Editor
